The New Course St. Andrews

History

The New Course is anything but new. It was opened in April 1895 after the Royal and Ancient Golf Club hired B Hall Blyth, an Edinburgh based civil engineer, to design the course. The layout of the course was entrusted to Old Tom Morris and his right hand man David Honeyman. Originally intended as a relief course, as the Old Course was struggling to keep pace with demand, it runs alongside it’s more famous neighbour. It has frequently been said that if the New Course were not situated next to the Old, it would warrant a much bigger international reputation than it already has. In fact many locals believe the New Course to be more difficult, and better, to play than the Old Course. Tight fairways lined by thick gorse and whin, subtle greens and four of the most testing par three holes in golf are its hallmarks. The course has the traditional out and back layout, with the 18th green just to the right of the first tee. It also has, in the great St Andrews tradition, shared fairways and even a double green at the 3rd and 15th holes.

If you’re unable to book a tee time before you go to St. Andrews, speak to someone at the reservation office to see if you can turn up on the day and get a time. When I played the New Course we just turned up at about 11am and were given a tee time at 12.30pm. I think they keep a lot of tee times free for local members but often these are not used, and allocated to visitors to St. Andrews instead.
